From Real Deal to Real Joy

Carlisle Evangelical Free Church. JC Hicks.

1 John 1:1-4
1:1
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

- writer has personal exp w/ Christ
--experience pushes him to pursue Christ more and tell others about it
- goal = complete joy

- God is for his glory
- God is for me
--gave his son to die for us out of his love
--if this is true then won't he care for us in the rest of our lives too?

- chasing happiness =
-- dissatisfied w/ circumstance
-- changing circumstances to achieve happiness
-- momentary bc our circumstances still bring us to focus on our own satisfaction

- what am I preoccupied with: circumstances or God?
- we can know realities of God from scripture
-- how does this change my perspective?
-- God is concerned for us but we're not the center of the world
-- Christ sent to glorify God by dying on the cross for our sins
--- our value is contingent on Christ

Practical ways to experience real joy
- have a relationship with Christ
- focus on Christ's love for us
-- recount what God has done for me daily
- examine what God has done and is doing
